The Golden Cross is a courtyard off Cornmarket, and Oxford's busiest shopping street runs a few metres from the door without most of it ever turning in.
That is the trade: quieter than the high street, harder to find, better once you are sat down. The building has stood here since the twelfth century — timber, uneven walls, and a courtyard that catches the afternoon sun.
The food here is deliberately lighter than Witney. Pastries, the cabinet, grilled sandwiches. If you want the full brunch, that is the other shop.
